Oil-based mud is a drilling fluid used in drilling engineering. It is composed of oil as the continuous phase and water as the dispersed phase in conjunction with emulsifiers, wetting agents and gellants. Water-based fluids (WBFs) are the most widely used systems, and are considered less expensive than oil-based fluids (OBFs) or synthetic-based fluids (SBFs). The OBFs and SBFs—also known as invert-emulsion systems—have an oil or synthetic base fluid as the continuous(or external) phase, and brine as the internal phase. The oil-based fluid is called OBM, and the water-based is named KCl. In other references [4] in which this specific oil-based fluid is mentioned, it is named OBM B.

Oil-based Mud (OBM) and Synthetics-Based Mud (SBM) Oil-based mud is a drilling-fluid system composed of base oil, water, additives and chemicals. Depending on the application and regulatory and environmental requirements, the base oil could be diesel, kerosene, low-toxic mineral oil or synthetic oils, such as esters, olefins or paraffins.

This oil-based drilling fluid system has excellent comprehensive properties, and it could resolve the contradiction between safety drilling of complicated deep wells.
